Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day:

Father’s Day is commemorated in most parts of the world on the third Sunday of June. This year it is being observed on June 20. Father’s Day is a celebration of fathers, honoring fatherhood, paternal bonds and the role fathers play in society.

Father’s Day was inaugurated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fathers and fatherhood but Father’s Day is not a public holiday.

History of Father’s Day:

Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart had requested the Spokane Ministerial Alliance observe 5 June which was her father’s birthday, to honor fatherhood. Her father had raised six children, as a single parent. Her deep sense of gratitude, love propelled her to make this request.

She was also inspired by Anna Jarvis’ endeavor to bring about Mother’s Day and proposed the Father’s Day idea. Finally, the Church agreed upon the third Sunday of June to commemorate. Then much later in 1966, President Lyndon B Johnson announced the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day as he signed a presidential proclamation.

Aim of Father’s Day:

The aim of the day is to express appreciation and acknowledge the role of the father figure in children’s lives, their character building, and society as a whole. UNICEF, too, had harped on the critical role the fathers play in early childhood learning.

The celebration of this lovely, warm paternal bond is quite popular all over the world, though the dates of observance might differ in some countries.

Celebration of Father’s Day:

On Father’s Day, people honor their father and express gratitude for his love and affection. As Father’s Day tradition people in the U.S. also pay tribute to grandfather, stepfather, foster father, uncle, or any other man who is like a father.

 Expression of Love:

In the UK the Father’s Day festival is celebrated on the third Sunday of June and therefore the date of the festival is never fixed. People celebrate the occasion by buying gifts and honoring their fathers as well. Several clubs, schools, and other societies in the UK organize Father’s Day parties to help provide people with an opportunity to celebrate the day.

Gifts for Fathers:

On Father’s Day, many people make a special effort to visit their father. They often take or send cards and gifts. Common Father’s Day gifts are ties, socks, underwear, sweaters, slippers, and other items of clothing. Other people give tools for household maintenance or garden work, luxury food items, or drinks.

Greeting Cards:

Children celebrate Father’s Day to make their fathers feel special and shower them with gifts, cards, and at times, special dinners. Most of them also spend time with their fathers and call them and extend greetings.

Slogans on Father’s Day:

Many Father’s Day gifts have slogans such as “The World’s Best Dad”, “For My Father”, or just a simple “Dad” on them. The increase in print-on-demand services offered by photo processing companies has made personalized gifts even more popular for Father’s Day.

Photographs Printing Objects:

Photographs of children can be printed on desk calendars, mugs, T-shirts, mouse mats, bags, and even ties. Many fathers are expected to take these to the office to remind them of their families while they are working.

Celebration in Schools:

Many schools, Sunday schools, and children’s organizations help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or gift for their father. Mothers and other family members may help children to make personalized gifts, such as calendars with drawings made by the children.

Family Picnic Party:

Some families celebrate Father’s Day by planning an outing or weekend trip, perhaps just for the male members of the family. This may be a simple walk in the countryside or a whole planned “experience”. Popular Father’s Day experiences include driving a fire engine, rally car, tank, or even airplane or taking a golf, football, or cricket lesson with a celebrity coach.
